Lahore Implements Free Public Transport to Combat Air Pollution During Basant

Lahore, Pakistan (HRNW)- The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Lahore reached 178 due to slow-moving air, prompting authorities to implement measures to reduce pollution during the Basant festival.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced a public relief initiative, providing free transport on February 6–8, including buses, Metro Bus, Orange Line Metro Train, and Yanggo rickshaws, urging citizens to avoid using private vehicles to reduce traffic and emissions. Motorcycles and private cars are requested to remain off the streets.

Authorities are also leveraging artificial intelligence and digital mapping to monitor pollution sources in real-time, with industrial units under continuous EPA surveillance. The Smog Control Room is fully operational, using drones and cameras for strict field monitoring. Violations from factories, kilns, and vehicles are being addressed immediately.

CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized that the government prioritizes public safety, smooth travel, and a healthier environment, and urged citizens to celebrate Basant responsibly. Elderly residents and patients were advised to take preventive measures against air pollution.
