Islamic Ideology Council Recommends Divorce Permissible After Husband’s Disappearance

Islamabad, Pakistan (HRNW)- The Islamic Ideology Council (IIC) has recommended allowing wives to seek divorce two years after a husband goes missing.

During a recent council meeting, members strongly condemned terrorism, highlighting attacks in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and affirming that the nation stands united with the armed forces against terrorism.

The council’s statement outlined several guidelines regarding marital law:

  • Divorce (Faskh-e-Nikah) is permissible two years after a husband’s disappearance.
  • If maintenance (Nafaqah) is not provided, divorce may be requested after one year.
  • If the husband is imprisoned, a court may be approached for divorce after three years.

The council also emphasized that honor killings are strictly against Islam, and no one is allowed to take the law into their own hands.
