Florida (HRNW)– The United States and Ukraine held critical negotiations in Florida on a possible peace agreement with Russia, a move being seen as a significant step towards ending the three-year conflict.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said before the meeting that he hopes the discussions will help pave the way for peace while safeguarding Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence.
The meeting was part of a two-week series of talks centered on a US-drafted peace proposal, which initially faced criticism for being overly favorable to Russia.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly voiced frustration over his inability to end the war swiftly, despite claiming strong ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Meanwhile, the US has increased pressure on Ukraine to make key concessions, including the possibility of relinquishing certain territories.
A major leadership change took place in the Ukrainian delegation. The new chief negotiator, Rustam Umarov, led the talks after the resignation of Andriy Yermak. Umarov thanked the US for its consistent support.
US Special Envoy Steve Wittkoff and President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner also attended the talks. Wittkoff is expected to meet Russian representatives later this week. The meeting was held at the Shell Benami private club near Miami, developed by Wittkoff’s company.
Earlier in Geneva, Ukraine presented its own revised peace plan in response to the US proposal. The country is currently facing political instability and a major corruption scandal in the energy sector, while Russia continues to push forward on the battlefield.
