Havana (HRNW)- Cuban security forces opened fire on a US-registered boat for violating maritime boundaries, killing four people and injuring six.

A statement issued by the Cuban government said that security forces targeted a boat that had illegally entered its territorial waters. Immediately after the incident, the bodies and injured were removed from the boat and transferred to a nearby hospital, while authorities have launched a formal investigation into the incident.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, while responding to the incident, clarified that this was not a US action, nor was any US government official or representative involved in the incident.

Marco Rubio further said that we will not rely solely on Cuba’s statement for our investigation, we are confident that we will get to the real story. He described such firing on the open sea as extremely unusual and said that a response plan would be decided only after collecting information.

On the other hand, Florida Attorney General James Athameier has reacted strongly, ordering an investigation into the incident. He said that the Cuban government cannot be trusted and that all resources will be used to hold the communist regime accountable.

Cuban authorities have identified the six people detained from the boat, including Imajil Sánchez González and Levedon Enrique Cruz Gómez. Cuba claims that the two men were previously wanted on suspicion of planning terrorism.

The other four detainees have been identified as Conrado Galando Sarriol, José Manuel Rodríguez Castillo, Cristian Ernesto Acosta Guevara and Roberto Azcorra Consuegra.

In addition, Cuba claims that it has also arrested another person from the island, Doniel Hernández Santos, who allegedly arrived from the United States to welcome the men.
