Sofia (HRNW)– Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelezkov Resigns Amid Nationwide Protests
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelezkov has resigned from all political and governmental positions following weeks of intense anti-government protests across the country.
According to international media, public anger erupted after the government unveiled its 2026 budget, proposing steep increases in taxes and social security contributions. Critics argued that instead of fighting corruption, the government was placing an additional burden on citizens.

Opposition parties accused the administration of using higher taxes to cover up corruption, which, they said, had already weakened the foundations of the state. As the crisis deepened, protests spread from the capital to dozens of cities, with thousands demanding the Prime Minister’s resignation.
Although calls for a no-confidence vote continued to mount, Zhelezkov chose to step down voluntarily in a televised address.
Bulgaria has already held seven elections in the last four years, with repeated failures to form long-lasting governments. With the Prime Minister’s resignation, political instability is expected to continue, and new elections are likely to be announced soon in the hope of forming a stable administration.
