KMC Spends More on Old Bus Repairs Than Cost of New Vehicles

Karachi – Pakistan (HRNW)- An audit of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) expenditures has revealed that repairing old buses cost more than purchasing new ones, raising questions about fiscal management in the city’s transport sector.

A bus procured by former official Naimatullah Khan was valued at PKR 17 million, while a new bus recently ordered under Sharjeel Memon’s tenure cost nearly PKR 223 million. However, KMC reportedly spent PKR 945 million on repairing just three buses that were over 18 years old.

The repairs were approved by the Mayor of Karachi and the Municipal Commissioner, prompting criticism from civic observers who describe the spending as inefficient and financially imprudent, given the age and condition of the vehicles.

This revelation highlights ongoing concerns about transparency and accountability in municipal procurement and maintenance practices in Karachi.
