Herat – Afghanistan (HRNW)- At least 30 Afghan nationals have died from extreme cold while attempting to illegally cross into Iran near the Herat region along the Pakistan–Iran border.
According to local sources, the victims were part of a group seeking entry into Iran in search of work and safety. However, they were caught in freezing winter conditions, leading to a tragic mass loss of life. Authorities fear the death toll may rise as rescue teams continue to recover bodies from remote areas.
So far, Afghan officials have not issued an official statement, though sources indicate that a formal report on the incident is expected soon.
The tragedy underscores the human cost of irregular migration, as thousands of Afghans continue to risk their lives each year in desperate attempts to escape poverty and instability.
