Karachi: Experts Warn Antibiotic Resistance Could Become Deadlier Than All Major Diseases by 2050

Karachi (HRNW)- At the Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week organized by the University of Karachi and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), experts warned that antibiotic resistance has become a serious threat to global health.

According to the speakers, infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria will surpass all types of deaths by 2050, while its financial burden is expected to increase from $66 billion to $159 billion.

Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi, Professor Dr. Muhammad Haris Shoaib said that the problem is becoming serious due to the misuse of antibiotics in viral infections, waste from pharmaceutical companies and the indiscriminate use of drugs in animals.

Dr. Raza Shah expressed concern over the pollution of antibiotics in the Indus River, saying that 38 settlements located on the banks of the river are dumping their waste directly into the river.

Experts suggested that the implementation of the ‘One Health’ concept, public awareness and joint research are needed to prevent antibiotic resistance.
