Bangladeshi Court Sentences Former PM Sheikh Hasina to Death, China Reacts

Dhaka (HRNW)- Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death by a domestic court, which also drew China’s reaction.

According to a global news agency, a Bangladeshi court sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid, 78, to death along with Interior Minister Asaduzzaman.

Sheikh Hasina Wajid had fled to India after the fall of her government and is still living in India. She was not present in court when the death sentence was pronounced.

During the regular press briefing of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a journalist also asked about Sheikh Hasina Wajid’s death sentence.

To which a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that sentencing the former Prime Minister to death is an internal and legal matter of Bangladesh.

The Chinese spokesperson refused to comment in detail on Sheikh Hasina’s death sentence, saying that it is obligatory to respect the law and court of any country.

He added that China has always maintained friendly and good relations with Bangladesh and its people and will continue to do so in the future.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning also expressed hope that Bangladesh will remain a united, stable and developing country in the future.

While pronouncing the death sentence, Judge Ghulam Murtaza found former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina guilty of three serious charges.

Including inciting violence against protesters, giving orders that led to their deaths and failing to prevent subsequent brutal actions.

Initially, the tribunal had considered a life sentence for Sheikh Hasina, but the court decided to sentence her to death after reviewing all the charges.

In this regard, the judge said that we have chosen to give her (former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina) only one sentence, namely “death”.

Sheikh Hasina rejected the court decision, calling it political, predetermined and a kangaroo court.

It should be noted that Sheikh Hasina has been living in India since August 5 last year, while cases are being filed against her in the country for violently suppressing anti-government protests and for murder.
