President Claudia Sheinbaum Harassed During Public Meeting in Mexico City

Mexico City (HRNW)- President Claudia Sheinbaum had an unpleasant incident in Mexico City when a man tried to touch her in an objectionable manner and kiss her on the neck during a meeting. Security officials arrested the man shortly after the incident.

According to the international news agency AFP, the incident took place on Tuesday near the presidential palace while Sheinbaum was meeting with her supporters. A video that went viral on social media shows a man approaching her, placing his arm around her shoulder and touching her waist and chest while also trying to kiss her. Security officials immediately intervened and pushed the man away.

According to reports, the man appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. However, President Sheinbaum showed restraint, spoke to the man in a civilized manner, agreed to have his picture taken and patted him on the back as he left.

The incident has sparked a strong reaction from the Ministry of Women and other government officials. “We strongly condemn the incident that happened to the president,” Minister Sutali Hernandez said on the social media platform X. “It is essential to end such male behaviors that normalize unwanted intrusions into women’s personal space.”

The incident highlights the growing problem of harassment against women in Mexico. According to the United Nations women’s agency (UN Women), 70 percent of women in Mexico aged 15 or older have experienced sexual harassment at least once in their lives.
