Brussels (HRNW)– An Italian journalist, Gabriele Nunziati, was dismissed from his job after asking a European Commission official whether Israel would contribute to Gaza’s reconstruction, although the Commission denies any role in his firing.
Nunziati, who worked as the Brussels correspondent for Italian news agency Nova, posed the question during a press briefing, referencing the EU’s stance on seeking war reconstruction funds from Russia for Ukraine. His question went viral on social media, drawing attention and controversy.
Following the incident, Nova News Agency labeled the question as “technically incorrect” and called the viral video an embarrassment, later terminating the journalist. Another reporter repeated Nunziati’s question, to which European Commission spokesperson Anwar Anoni responded that the actions of Russia and Israel cannot be compared, and the Commission would not enter that debate.
However, European Commission spokesperson Olof Gul firmly denied any contact with the news agency regarding the dismissal, reiterating that the Commission “strongly believes in freedom of the press” and answers “all kinds of questions in the press room.”
Meanwhile, reports note that Israel has killed over 69,000 Palestinians and injured more than 170,000 in Gaza. Despite a ceasefire brokered by US President Donald Trump, Israel continues its bombing campaign, claiming to target Hamas but killing many civilians, including women and children.
