India Rejects US Pressure After Trump’s 50% Tariff, Vows to Seek New Markets

New Delhi (HRNW)- India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has said that India will not bow to US pressure and will instead focus on attracting markets. This is the first statement issued by the Indian minister after US President Donald Trump imposed a steep 50% tariff on Indian goods.

Speaking at a construction industry event in New Delhi on Friday, Piyush Goyal said that if anyone wants to sign a free trade agreement with us, India is always ready for it, but he added that India “will never bow down or look weak, we will move forward together and gain new markets.”

Since returning to the White House this year, US President Donald Trump has used tariffs as a policy tool on a large scale, which has affected global trade.

Trump’s latest tariffs have strained US-India relations, with New Delhi already calling them “unfair, unjust and unreasonable”.

The US was India’s largest export destination in 2024, with exports worth $87.3 billion, with experts warning that a 50% duty amounts to a trade embargo and is likely to hurt smaller firms.
