Afghanistan: Clarifying Pakistan’s Role in Post-9/11 Military Operations

Kabul (HRNW)- The first air strikes on Afghanistan after 9/11 were carried out on October 7, 2001, from bases in Arab countries and from American aircraft carriers in the Arabian Sea. Ground troops were landed in Afghanistan from Arab airfields in November 2001. Pakistani military bases were used only for drone strikes and intelligence missions after December 2001, when Afghanistan was already under American occupation. Pakistan cited their rapid defeat and international pressure as the reason for not standing with the Taliban, and Pakistan played a role in preventing the complete destruction of the Taliban by providing limited cooperation to the United States. Efforts are being made to convey these facts to the Afghan people.
