Karachi (HRNW)- The dire situation in which Karachi stands today is not the result of any natural disaster but a clear evidence of continuous government negligence, looting and poor governance. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Insaf Lawyers Forum Karachi leader and renowned lawyer Advocate Hasnain Ali Chohan said that the provincial and city governments have deliberately deprived the city of basic amenities. Instead of solving the water crisis, the tanker mafia was strengthened, while important projects like K-IV were sacrificed for political expediency.
He said that the drainage system has been destroyed, the transport infrastructure has been shattered, and the delay in the BRT project has reduced Karachi’s main highway to ruins. The garbage collection system is limited to papers only. Three institutions in the city claim to collect garbage, but the streets are still a heap of garbage. Karachi generates about 14,000 tons of garbage every day, but even half of it is not disposed of and is dumped in drains and roads, which has made the situation even more serious. He said that all these are the worst examples of corruption and incompetence of the Sindh government and the city government.
He added that if the thousands of tons of garbage lying on the streets of Karachi are used in power plants, then cheap electricity can be provided to the citizens and the electricity crisis in the city can be overcome. Developed countries of the world generate electricity from garbage, but unfortunately, proper use of garbage is not being done in our country.
Advocate Hasnain Ali Chohan said that street crime has made the lives of citizens miserable. This year, more than 70 innocent citizens have lost their lives during robberies, while more than 650 have been injured. He said that the people of Karachi are forced to live in fear while the government is using the police for political purposes. The police are busy protecting powerful people instead of stopping crimes, and ordinary citizens are helpless.
He made it clear that Karachi cannot be allowed to fall prey to further government experiments. If the provincial and city governments instead of hiding their failures adopt the path of transparent accountability, many problems can be solved automatically. He said that Karachi is currently demanding a strong, empowered and corruption-free local government system, otherwise the city will continue to move towards further destruction.
He said that if Karachi had been given its share of Rs 3260 billion in the last 15 years, most of the city’s problems would have been solved today.
