Frankfurt (dpa) – The number of children and young people under the age of 18 experiencing poverty in Germany declined over the course of last year, but an increasing number faced the likelihood of violence or neglect, according to official statistics published on Tuesday.
The number of those under 18 in danger of poverty or social exclusion fell to 2.4 million, down 6 per cent on the figure for 2017, the Federal Statistical Office reported.
An increasing number of households with children were able to afford a one-week holiday. Whereas 15.5 per cent of such households said in 2017 they were not able to afford this, in 2018 that figure fell to 13.4 per cent.
But more young people were exposed to neglect or violence. Youth welfare offices found that 50,400 young people under the age of 18 were in danger in this respect, some 10 per cent up on the 2017 figure.
