New York (HRNW)- History was made in New York, America’s largest city, where 34-year-old Democratic leader Zohran Mamdani took the oath of office as mayor in the early hours of January 1, 2026, on the Holy Quran. He has become the first Muslim mayor in the city’s history.
The simple but historic swearing-in ceremony was held in a closed subway station located below City Hall. According to foreign media, Mamdani took the oath by placing his hands on two copies of the Holy Quran – the second was taken from the New York Public Library’s Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture.
New York Attorney General Letitia James administered the oath to him at the ceremony, while his wife Rama Dawaji was also present. Mamdani’s parents—renowned filmmaker Mira Nair and educationist Mahmud Mamdani—were also present on the occasion.
He said the subway station was chosen to highlight the commitment to the working class and the importance of public transportation. A large public ceremony will be held soon –
According to reports, Zohran Mamdani’s official public swearing-in ceremony will take place later outside City Hall, with Senator Bernie Sanders, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and thousands of citizens expected to attend.
