New York (HRNW)- The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting on the deteriorating political and social situation in Venezuela, in which member states expressed serious concern about the potential impact on regional peace and stability. The meeting also called for the immediate release of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Speaking at the meeting, the Chinese delegate strongly criticized the United States and said that US actions have jeopardized peace in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Chinese delegate strongly condemned the US actions, calling them “bullying” and emphasizing that interference in the internal affairs of any sovereign state is a clear violation of the UN Charter.
China said that the Venezuelan issue should be resolved through political dialogue and diplomatic means, not through force or pressure. Other countries participating in the meeting also called on the parties to exercise restraint, reduce tensions and abide by international law.
