Tehran (HRNW)- The United Nations has expressed deep concern over reports that eight people have been killed during the ongoing protests in Iran. The UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights Council has said that the world body is closely and continuously monitoring the evolving situation in Iran.
The UN statement said that the reports of loss of life during the recent protests in Iran are worrying and that such incidents are contrary to international human rights principles. The Special Rapporteur stressed that freedom of expression and peaceful protest are fundamental rights of every individual, which must be respected.
The statement urged the Iranian authorities to refrain from the use of force against protesters and to provide citizens with full opportunity to exercise their constitutional and fundamental rights. The UN also said that differences of opinion should be resolved through dialogue and political process, rather than force.
According to the Special Rapporteur, the human rights situation is being monitored and the UN will review further developments in this regard. The international community has also been appealed to play its role in protecting human rights.
