Trump Warns Iraq Against Re-Election of Nouri al-Maliki, Cites Threats to Stability and US Support

Washington (HRNW)- US President Donald Trump has warned Iraq that the United States will withdraw support if former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki returns to power. Trump’s warning came after the Coordination Framework, an alliance of Shiite political parties, announced its support for Maliki’s nomination.

Trump stated that Iraq experienced poverty and unrest during Maliki’s previous term from 2006 to 2014 and emphasized that re-election could prevent development, prosperity, and freedom without American assistance. US officials have expressed concern over Maliki’s close ties to Iran, especially amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also highlighted the risks of a pro-Iranian government in Iraq.

Experts note that Trump’s stance could pose a major political challenge for Maliki, though Iraqi politics have historically been unpredictable.
