Tehran (HRNW) – A Tehran court has ordered the United States to pay $22 billion in damages for its alleged involvement in supporting the 2022 protests across Iran. Judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangir stated during a weekly press briefing that the court concluded that the US had backed the “riots,” which Iranian authorities claim triggered violent unrest.

The protests erupted in September 2022 after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died in custody after being detained by morality police for allegedly violating Iran’s dress code for women. The demonstrations stretched over months, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of civilians and security officers and the arrest of thousands.
Iranian officials have repeatedly accused foreign powers, particularly the US, of orchestrating and fueling the unrest. So far, there has been no official response from Washington regarding the court ruling.
