Karachi (HRNW) — The first meeting of the Board of Governors of the Sindh Center for Excellence on Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) was held in Karachi under the chairmanship of Sindh Minister for Home and Law, Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar.
The meeting reviewed the strategic framework for preventing violent extremism across the province. Minister Lanjar announced that a new provincial CVE center has been established, which will operate under the National Policy on Preventing Violent Extremism (NPVE-2024) and the Revised National Action Plan.
During the session, participants were briefed on policy formulation and Sindh-specific CVE initiatives. Minister Lanjar emphasized that research and evidence-based analysis on the causes and drivers of extremism would be a top priority.
He also stressed the need to strengthen the capacity and specialized training of police, institutions, and community stakeholders to effectively counter violent extremism.
The Minister announced that peace and dialogue programs would be launched for youth, women, religious scholars, and minority communities, promoting inclusivity and social harmony. He added that rehabilitation and social reintegration of individuals affected by extremism would remain among the Center’s main priorities.
The meeting decided to develop a monitoring and evaluation framework, including dashboards and periodic review mechanisms, to track progress.
The new CVE Center will consist of two main wings — a Research and Community Engagement Wing, and a Finance and IT Wing. The initiative will begin in six to eight districts during the first phase, later expanding to all districts of Sindh in the second phase.
A five-year strategic roadmap was approved during the session, outlining that the first year will focus on planning, the second and third years on expansion, and the fourth and fifth years on full institutional integration.
Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar reaffirmed the Sindh government’s commitment to coordinated actions aligned with national priorities in the fight against extremism.
The meeting was attended by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Iqbal Memon, Inspector General of Sindh Police Javed Alam Odho, Finance Secretary Fayaz Jatoi, Secretary Law, Prosecutor General Sindh Ali Ahmed Baloch, Prosecutor General Muntazir Mehdi, Suleman S. Mehdi, and representatives of civil society.
