Sindh Government Decides to Conduct Province-Wide Survey of Historical Buildings

Karachi (HRNW) — The Sindh government has approved a comprehensive survey of historical and heritage buildings across the province, a decision taken during a meeting of the Cultural Heritage Advisory Committee chaired by Chief Secretary Sindh, Asif Haider Shah.

The meeting was attended by the Secretaries of Culture, Works & Services, the DG of Sindh Building Control Authority, and the Director General of the Department of Antiquities. Committee members Hamid Haroon, renowned archaeologist Dr. Kaleem Allah Lashari, and architectural consultant Sohail Ahmed Kalhoro were also present.

The last heritage survey in Sindh was conducted in 2017, which identified 3,371 buildings as heritage structures. Since then, it has become necessary to assess the current condition of these buildings, identify new heritage structures, and ensure their protection, according to Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah.

The Chief Secretary instructed that the technical committee of the Heritage Department be strengthened. To support the committee’s secretariat, it was decided to hire qualified and capable officers from the market.

Furthermore, the meeting concluded with a decision to make laws related to heritage building protection stricter and more effective to ensure the preservation of Sindh’s historical architecture.
