PTA Reports Massive Crackdown on Social Media Content with Thousands of Links Blocked Across Facebook and TikTok

Islamabad, Pakistan (HRNW)- The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has submitted a comprehensive report to the court regarding its aggressive crackdown on illegal and inappropriate digital content, revealing that Facebook and TikTok have been the primary targets for censorship. According to the official data, the PTA scrutinized over 229,000 links on Facebook and subsequently blocked 197,000 of them, while TikTok saw more than 163,000 video links removed out of 174,000 checked. Instagram also faced significant restrictions, with an 87% blocking rate resulting in 38,000 URLs being shut down out of 43,000 reviewed. This regulatory action highlights the government’s intensifying efforts to monitor and filter social media platforms, raising significant questions regarding digital rights and the balance between content regulation and freedom of expression within the country.
