Washington (HRNW)– US President Donald Trump has warned India that the United States may impose additional tariffs on agricultural imports, specifically targeting rice from India, during an event focused on agricultural issues in Washington.

President Trump criticized the large volume of rice imports from Asian countries, particularly India, calling it “dumping” that threatens the livelihood of American farmers. He stated that the unfairly cheap rice flooding the US market has caused losses to domestic producers and emphasized that protecting American agricultural and manufacturing sectors is a priority.
Trump also noted that tariffs could extend to fertilizer imports from Canada if needed. During the event, he questioned Treasury Secretary Scott Besant about exemptions on Indian rice imports, to which Besant replied that while there is a small tax, discussions are ongoing.
It is worth noting that US farmers have long complained that cheap international rice imports have negatively affected domestic production and pricing.
