PMDC Conducts Hearing Over Maternal and Neonatal Deaths in Mirpurkhas

Karachi, Pakistan (HRNW)– The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) held a detailed disciplinary hearing at PC Hotel Karachi regarding the tragic death of a woman and her newborn during childbirth at Patel Maternity Home, Mirpurkhas. The case (Ref: DC-32-C/2023) was initiated following a complaint by Mohammad Asif, who lost both his wife and child due to alleged professional negligence.

Asif testified that his wife had been under the care of Dr. Seeta Ram Kishan for nine months, with constant assurances of a “normal” delivery. However, an abrupt decision to perform surgery at the final stage led to critical complications. The patient was then shifted to Isra Hospital, Hyderabad, without a formal written referral, where she passed away shortly after arrival.

During the hearing, Dr. Seeta Ram Kishan admitted that she does not possess a formal degree in Gynecology, having only completed a training course at Isra Hospital in 2010. Despite this lack of specialization, she confessed to performing one to two delivery cases daily. The PMDC board expressed grave concern over the continued practice of such procedures by non-specialists, especially following a double fatality. The Council has reserved its judgment, with disciplinary actions expected in the coming days.
