Pakistan Rejects UN Human Rights Chief’s Statement on 27th Constitutional Amendment

Islamabad (HRNW) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has rejected the statement by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and its chief, Volker Türk, expressing concern over Pakistan’s 27th Constitutional Amendment, calling it “baseless” and “contrary to facts.”

The spokesperson stated that the amendment was passed by a two-thirds majority in Pakistan’s Parliament, and such constitutional amendments are fully within the mandate of elected representatives, as is the norm in democratic countries.

The Ministry emphasized that Pakistan remains committed to human rights, fundamental freedoms, and the rule of law. However, criticism of this amendment, according to the Ministry, is based on “political bias and misinformation.”
