Occupied Kashmir Observes January 26 as Black Day Amid Protests and Shutdowns

Srinagar (HRNW)- While India celebrates Republic Day on January 26, Kashmiris in occupied Jammu and Kashmir observe the same day as Black Day, marking the imposition of the Indian constitution on January 26, 1950.

Kashmiris assert their right to self-determination under UN resolutions, which they claim was violated by India’s unilateral constitutional changes. Every year, complete shutdowns and peaceful protests are held across the region to express opposition to what they consider an imposed political system.

Observers note that these protests are not signs of fear or weakness, but a rejection of forced rule as democracy. Heavy security measures and arrests on Black Day are being interpreted as evidence that the administration lacks genuine public support.
