Lahore (HRNW) — A deeply distressing case has emerged near Bhati Gate, where a woman and her young daughter tragically lost their lives after falling into an open sewer line. The husband of the deceased woman has now accused police officials of physical abuse and coercion to extract a false confession.
Speaking to a private TV channel, Ghulam Murtaza, the grieving husband, said that when he went to the police station to report the accident involving his wife and child, he was instead detained by the police. According to Murtaza, SP Bilal and SHO Zain allegedly subjected him to physical violence and pressured him to confess to killing his wife.
Murtaza stated that there had been no domestic dispute, and that he, his wife, and daughter had gone out together for recreation. He told police that he witnessed his wife and child fall into the sewer line, but officers refused to believe his account, labeling him a liar.
He further alleged that the police confiscated his mobile phone and kept him under continuous pressure to admit guilt in the tragic deaths. Murtaza also claimed that his cousin, Tanveer, was detained without justification.
It is important to recall that the incident occurred near Data Darbar, Lahore, where initial police statements denied the occurrence of any such accident. However, nearly ten hours later, the bodies of the woman and her child were recovered three kilometers away, confirming the tragedy and raising serious questions about the delayed response and handling of the case.
The case has since drawn public concern and calls for an impartial investigation to ensure justice for the victims and accountability for any abuse of authority.
Human Rights News Worldwide (HRNW) urges authorities to uphold transparency, dignity, and the right to fair treatment for all citizens — especially victims of tragedy and their families.
