Karachi Launches Pakistan’s First Drone-Based E-Challan System Under Safe City Project

Karachi (HRNW) After the introduction of modern and automatic cameras under the Safe City Project in Shahr-e-Quaid, drone-assisted e-challans have now been formally launched against those violating traffic rules.

According to the report, the Traffic Regulation and Citation System (TRACTS) and the Safe City Authority conducted a drone surveillance operation in Saddar and nearby areas, where two vehicles violating no-parking and double-parking rules were identified and fined.

IG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah told HRNW that this is the first time in Pakistan’s history that drones are being used to issue e-challans in Karachi. He said that no-parking and double-parking signboards have recently been installed across Saddar by the traffic police and district administration.

Drone surveillance now helps in photographing illegally parked vehicles without direct police interaction, ensuring transparency. During the latest operation, e-challans of Rs. 10,000 were issued on Zaib-un-Nisa Street during peak hours.

Following the success of the pilot operation, the scope of drone-based e-challans will soon expand to Tariq Road, Rashid Minhas Road and major commercial areas. DIG Traffic also revealed that robot cars will be introduced in Karachi within the next 10 to 12 days to help resolve parking problems. Training of officers for these robotic units is nearing completion.

With the new system, lifters will no longer remove vehicles, reducing disputes between citizens and police officials. E-challans will now be delivered directly to citizens’ homes. A 50% discount will be offered if fines are paid within 14 days; after December 29, unpaid fines will be doubled.
