Karachi (HRNW)– Chairman New Karachi Town Muhammad Yousuf has taken a significant and urgent step for public safety by conducting a surprise visit to various areas of the town. During the visit, he, along with town officers and staff, initiated the immediate installation of covers on open manholes.

Chairman Muhammad Yousuf said that human life is the most valuable asset, and it is the foremost responsibility of the town administration to protect citizens from daily hazards. He referred specifically to the heartbreaking accident in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, where a young child, Muhammad Ibrahim, fell into an open manhole and lost his life.
Expressing deep sorrow, he said, “The tragedy of innocent Ibrahim is a tragedy for the entire nation. I fully share the grief of the family. Such incidents are not mere accidents but the result of institutional negligence. This year alone, nearly two dozen precious lives have been lost due to open manholes — a deeply concerning reality for any civilized society.”
The chairman announced that all open manholes within New Karachi Town will be sealed using town funds. Although this responsibility belongs to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB), he said that the town administration cannot remain silent when public safety is at risk.
He urged the Sindh government to take urgent and permanent measures for citizens’ safety and appealed to Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab to ensure the Water and Sewerage Board becomes fully active and accountable.
He added that a united urban administration can bring visible change even in a large city like Karachi. “The people have given us a mandate to serve, and we will fulfill it through action, not political slogans,” he said.
Chairman Yousaf also reviewed ongoing development projects, stating that the construction work of 600 streets in New Karachi Town is progressing rapidly, with another 600 streets planned in the second phase — the largest development initiative in the town’s history.
He reaffirmed that improved urban facilities, a clean environment, quality infrastructure, and public safety remain top priorities of the administration. “New Karachi Town will become an area that sets an example for the entire city,” he said.
