Karachi: 2025 Emerges as One of the Deadliest Years for Journalists Worldwide, IFJ Report

Karachi (HRNW)- The year 2025 has passed away with its bitter memories. The past year was heavy on journalists and 128 journalists were killed around the world.

The International Federation of Journalists says that 128 journalists were killed around the world during 2025. More than half of them were from the Middle East.

The IFJ General Secretary termed these figures as a global red alert for journalists and said that in the absence of justice, the killers of journalists get a chance to flourish.

According to the IFJ, 533 journalists have also been imprisoned during the same period, and this number has more than doubled in the last five years.

The highest number of deaths was in Gaza, where 56 professional journalists were killed in a year during the war between Hamas and Israel. In addition, incidents of killing journalists have also come to light in Yemen, Ukraine, Sudan, Peru, India and other countries.
While China has the highest number of journalists behind bars, with 143 journalists in prison.

The IFJ’s tally of journalists killed is much higher than that of Reporters Without Borders because of differences in their counting methods. The number of journalists killed this year also includes nine who died in accidents.

The IFJ’s general secretary condemned the incidents, calling them a kind of “immunity” for those who are behind them.
