Journalist Aslam Shah Granted Bail in PECA Case; Karachi Press Club Welcomes Decision

KARACHI (HRNW)- A Judicial Magistrate (South) has approved the bail application of journalist Aslam Shah, who was recently detained under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA). The court ordered the journalist to submit surety bonds of 30,000 PKR for his release.

The case originated from a complaint filed by a Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation official. The arrest sparked a wave of protests from the Karachi Press Club (KPC), KUJ (Dastoor), and PFUJ (Dastoor). Secretary KPC, Aslam Khan, who recently visited Shah in prison, hailed the bail as a victory for the community but reiterated that such laws are often used to suppress the truth.

Solidarity Statement

“Journalism is not a crime. The use of the PECA Act to target media professionals for reporting on public institutions is a direct violation of freedom of expression. We stand in unwavering solidarity with Aslam Shah and all journalists who risk their safety to hold power accountable.”
