Iran Screenwriter Arrested Amid Rights Crackdown

Tehran, Iran (HRNW)- In Tehran, Iranian authorities detained Mehdi Mahmoudian, an Oscar-nominated screenwriter and outspoken critic of the regime’s violent repression of protestors. Mahmoudian was arrested shortly before the Academy Awards, after signing a public statement condemning systemic brutality against civilians demanding political, economic, and social reform. Two additional signatories were also detained, and the arrests highlight how artistic and intellectual figures face state reprisals for exercising freedom of expression — a core human right under international law.
