International Humanitarian Law at Breaking Point

Geneva, Switzerland (HRNW)- A new global report by the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights reveals that international humanitarian law (IHL) — designed to protect civilians in armed conflict — is nearing a “critical breaking point.” The study documents widespread violations, including indiscriminate violence, targeting of non-combatants, and rampant impunity in more than 20 active conflicts. The analysis underscores that over 100,000 civilians are being killed yearly, with particularly severe harm in Gaza, Ukraine, and parts of Africa. The findings call for urgent international actions to reinforce legal norms, restrict weapons use in populated areas, and strengthen war-crimes prosecution.
