Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi Announces Crackdown on Fake News Circulation on Social Media

Islamabad (HRNW) Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has announced strict action against the increasing fake news on social media and said that 90 percent of the news on social media is fake and this unbridled situation will not be tolerated any longer.

Talking to the media in Islamabad, Mohsin Naqvi said that PEMRA takes action when false news is broadcast on national media, while pictures and news are posted on social media without any verification. He clarified that now it is not possible for anyone to post news of their choice.

He said: “Those who spread fake news are not journalists.”

“Freedom of expression has its place, but spreading false news cannot be allowed.”

“A crackdown will be launched against those who post false news on social media.”

The Interior Minister added that some people are sitting abroad and spreading baseless things about the country’s institutions, but such people will also be brought back to Pakistan soon and made accountable before the law.

He said that there will be no politics or any compromise on national security, while humiliating or character assassination of anyone on social media will not be allowed.

Mohsin Naqvi warned that those who are running false propaganda campaigns from abroad will also soon face legal action and will have to answer for their statements.
