Lahore\/Karachi (HRNW)- Rao Abdul Kaleem, a senior grade 21 officer of the Police Service of Pakistan, has been appointed as the new Inspector General of Punjab Police. Interestingly, Rao Abdul Kaleem hails from Sindh province and his native district is Nawabshah (present Shaheed Benazirabad), which is also the hometown and constituency of President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari.<\/p>\n
Rao Abdul Kaleem joined the Police Service of Pakistan after passing the CSS examination in 1996. He has nearly 30 years of extensive experience in policing. Before being appointed as IG Punjab, he was serving in a very important and sensitive post of Additional IG Special Branch of the police.<\/p>\n
The appointment of an officer from Sindh at the helm of Punjab Police has once again raised the question of whether an officer from another province can be appointed as IG Sindh on a permanent basis in Sindh or will IGs from other provinces continue to be appointed here only for a caretaker or temporary period.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, a large number of Sindh Police rankers are of the opinion that during the tenure of IGs from Sindh, adequate welfare and departmental measures are not taken for lower-level officers and officials. Rankers say that due to the lack of timely promotions, incentives and other facilities, the post of IG Sindh is considered \u201cenemy of the employees\u201d for them.<\/p>\n
On the contrary, whenever officers from Punjab or other provinces were appointed as IG Sindh for a limited period, they took significant steps for the welfare of the rankers. The name of former Sindh IG Raja Rifat Mukhtiar is still taken as an example in police circles, during whose tenure several police-friendly reforms were implemented for police personnel.<\/p>\n
The appointment of Rao Abdul Kaleem as IG Punjab is being described as an important example of inter-provincial trust and professional competence in the police service.<\/p>\n
