Karachi, Pakistan (HRNW)<\/strong> \u2014 Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon<\/strong> has stated that the Karachi Chamber of Commerce<\/strong>, in coordination with the provincial government<\/strong>, is holding discussions with market associations<\/strong> to enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs)<\/strong> related to fire safety and building compliance.<\/p>\n

He warned that markets failing to implement safety SOPs would be shut down<\/strong> as part of the government\u2019s enforcement measures.<\/p>\n

Responding to a private TV channel\u2019s question about the Karachi Mayor\u2019s comments on weaknesses in the Gul Plaza fire safety audit<\/strong>, the minister said, \u201cI am not aware of when or where the Mayor made that statement, but the government\u2019s role is to take action \u2014 and we will act where SOPs are violated.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is noteworthy that Mayor Karachi<\/strong> had stated a day earlier during a media talk that traders were advised to implement safety measures<\/strong>, but strict enforcement was avoided to prevent criticism from the media accusing the administration of being unfair to the business community.<\/p>\n
