Karachi (HRNW)- The Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Karachi and the Institution of Engineers Pakistan (Karachi Center) on Friday organized the first international conference \u201cSustainable Green Energy, Environment and Digital Innovations\u201d. The event was held at the Jinnah Auditorium of Dr. A.Q. Khan Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering.<\/p>\n
In the opening session, renowned experts and academicians emphasized the need for global challenges and local initiatives to solve them. Dow University of Engineering and Technology Vice Chancellor Eng. Prof. Dr. Sumairan Hussain highlighted the growing problem of e-waste (electronic waste). According to her, about 62 million tons of e-waste were generated in the world in 2022, the impact of which can have serious consequences on sustainability and the environment. She said that this issue is not being given serious attention in Pakistan yet, but if steps are taken today, the country can lead in this field.<\/p>\n
University of Karachi Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi termed environmental protection as the biggest global challenge and said that effective policies are needed for this and social scientists and policymakers should also play a role in it.<\/p>\n
Prof. Dr. Iqbal Muhammad Mujtaba from the University of Bradford, UK, emphasized the need for sustainable, resilient and eco-friendly systems and highlighted the importance of effective management of water, energy, food and education. He said that food waste wastes billions of liters of water and millions of hectares of land globally annually and produces millions of tons of greenhouse gases.<\/p>\n
Institution of Engineers Pakistan (Karachi Center) Chairman Eng. Muhammad Farooq Arabi said that today\u2019s challenges\u2014climate change, energy shortage, environmental degradation and digital technology\u2014require integrated and innovative solutions, which are possible only through the efforts of local experts and institutions.<\/p>\n
Local and international experts presented practical suggestions for sustainable green energy technologies, environmental protection, digital innovations, effective management of water and food and urban development at the conference.<\/p>\n
Dean Faculty of Science Professor Dr. Bilquis Gul said that universities and professional institutions can play a key role in solving global and national challenges and can provide viable, environmentally friendly and economically viable solutions through research, innovation and collaboration with industry and policymakers.<\/p>\n
At the event, Professor Dr. Atla Eugene from Turkey, Syed Shujaat Rizvi, Professor Dr. Shagufta Ishtiaq, Professor Dr. Kishan Chand Makwana, Nawabshah, Professor SRF Kazmi, Arshad Mohiuddin, Madiha Jabbayin and others also expressed their views.<\/p>\n
The conference emphasized that sustainable development, green energy and environmentally friendly measures are possible in Pakistan only through local solutions, local experts and international cooperation.<\/p>\n
