Islamabad (HRNW)- The federal government has decided to reopen closed local gas fields from January 2026, after which local gas supply will start being included in the system in a phased manner.<\/p>\n
According to sources in the Ministry of Petroleum, this decision has been taken after Qatar agreed to cancel additional surplus LNG cargoes. Qatar will cancel 24 of its LNG cargoes for 2026, while a total of 35 LNG cargoes will be canceled, including 24 cargoes of Pakistan LNG and 11 cargoes of ENI.<\/p>\n
According to officials, local gas wells of about 200 MMCFD had to be closed last year due to the arrival of additional cargoes, as the power sector did not fully utilize the imported LNG, which resulted in an increase in the surplus in the gas system. The local fields were temporarily closed due to concerns of overpressure due to the injection of surplus LNG into the pipelines.<\/p>\n
Sources said that in 2026, Pakistan will buy 85 LNG cargoes from Qatar instead of 120, which will save the country about Rs201 billion.<\/p>\n
The government says that the reactivation of local gas fields will reduce import dependence and domestic and industrial consumers are expected to get relief in a phased manner.<\/p>\n
