Karachi (HRNW)<\/a>–<\/strong> Engineers at NED University of Engineering and Technology have successfully tested Pakistan’s first driverless car powered by artificial intelligence, marking a major milestone in the country’s technological advancement.<\/p>\n

The AI-based autonomous vehicle is now moving on the internal roads of NED University after a successful test drive, astonishing students, faculty, and visitors alike.<\/p>\n

The project began a year ago at the National Center for Artificial Intelligence (NCAI), Department of Computer and Information Systems Engineering. The imported electronic vehicle from China was transformed into a fully automated car using AI, robotics, mapping systems, advanced sensors, and vision-based algorithms.<\/p>\n

Dr. Muhammad Khurram, the project lead and Director of NCAI, told HRNW during a demonstration that after a year of continuous effort, the project has now matured to a functional stage. He said that road trials are underway, and the team has enhanced the vehicle using radar technology and computer vision. After achieving stable steering control, the team is now working on object detection, lane recognition, speed-limit detection, and traffic signal identification\u2014key components for achieving fully autonomous driving.<\/p>\n

Currently, the vehicle’s speed algorithm is capped at 15-20 km\/h. The vehicle is equipped with autonomous turning mode and can assess oncoming traffic for safer decision-making.<\/p>\n

Engineer Inzamam Khan, a member of the development team, said that this is one of the few autonomous vehicles in the world capable of navigating Pakistan’s unpredictable urban environment due to its robust sensor technology.<\/p>\n

The project was initiated under former Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Sarosh Hashmat Lodhi and has reached this breakthrough stage under the leadership of the current Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Tufail Ahmed.<\/p>\n
