Aomori (HRNW)<\/a>–<\/strong> A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake shook buildings and sent huge waves crashing into the sea off the northeastern coast of Japan.<\/p>\n

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake struck the eastern coast of Aomori, affecting the entire northeastern region. It measured 7.6 on the Richter scale, with a depth of 50 kilometers and its epicenter on the Aomori coast. A tsunami warning was issued within 10 minutes of the earthquake\u2019s occurrence.<\/p>\n

Japanese media report that municipal authorities have been placed on red alert, while coastal residents have been instructed to immediately move to safer areas. Authorities warned that possible tsunami waves could reach up to 3 meters high. No casualties have been reported so far, but investigations into potential technical malfunctions at nuclear facilities and other industrial centers are underway.<\/p>\n

This is the second major earthquake in a month, following a 6.7-magnitude quake in the North Pacific region last month, which prompted a tsunami advisory. Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world and has experienced many destructive quakes, including the 9.0-magnitude Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in 2011, which resulted in over 18,000 dead and missing and triggered the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Other significant quakes include the 6.9-magnitude Kobe earthquake in 1995, which killed 6,000 people, and the 2004 Niigata earthquake.<\/p>\n
