Canberra (HRNW)<\/a>–<\/strong> Australia has imposed financial sanctions and travel bans on four senior officials of the Taliban government in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

According to Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, the move was taken due to the deteriorating human rights situation in Afghanistan, especially against women and girls.<\/p>\n

Penny Wong said that these Taliban officials are accused of imposing severe restrictions on women’s education, employment, movement and participation in public life, which is against basic human values. Those targeted by the sanctions include three Taliban ministers and the chief justice.<\/p>\n

Australia has introduced a new government framework under which it can directly impose sanctions on individuals involved in human rights abuses. Officials say the aim of this decision is to increase pressure on the Taliban and extend support to the Afghan people.<\/p>\n

It should be remembered that after the Taliban returned to power in 2021, Australia accepted thousands of Afghan citizens\u2014mostly women and children\u2014as refugees. A large number of people in Afghanistan are still dependent on humanitarian aid.<\/p>\n
