WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES (HRNW)<\/strong> \u2014 Human Rights Watch has documented accounts of families affected by increased immigration arrests and deportations in the United States, focusing on the consequences for children separated from detained or deported parents.<\/p>\n

In a report published September 28, Human Rights Watch interviewed parents and children affected by immigration enforcement during 2026.<\/p>\n

The organization said more than 540,000 people have been deported since the beginning of the second Trump administration in January 2025.<\/p>\n

Human Rights Watch reported that immigration arrests increased during the summer of 2026, including arrests involving people without criminal convictions.<\/p>\n

The organization documented cases in which parents were detained and subsequently separated from children living in the United States.<\/p>\n

One case involved a Guatemalan mother who was detained after being stopped by police in Alabama.<\/p>\n

Human Rights Watch said the woman was transferred through several detention facilities before being deported to Guatemala.<\/p>\n

She had three children in the United States, including a young child and a daughter who requires ongoing medical care.<\/p>\n

The report also describes the case of a Haitian father who was detained during an immigration check-in and later deported after spending months in detention.<\/p>\n

His wife and young son remained in the United States.<\/p>\n

Human Rights Watch interviewed healthcare professionals who said they had treated children experiencing distress following the detention or deportation of parents.<\/p>\n

The organization documented accounts of children experiencing anxiety, sleep difficulties and other serious emotional effects after family separation.<\/p>\n

Human Rights Watch also raised concerns about detention conditions, citing a recent US government oversight report concerning standards at one immigration detention facility.<\/p>\n

The organization said immigration enforcement policies can have consequences extending beyond the individuals arrested or deported.<\/p>\n

The report focuses particularly on the impact of family separation on children, including US citizen children whose parents are removed from the country.<\/p>\n

Human Rights Watch is calling attention to the need to consider children’s rights and family unity in immigration enforcement practices.<\/p>\n
