RENK, SOUTH SUDAN (HRNW)<\/strong> \u2014 UNICEF is supporting education programs for children displaced by conflict in South Sudan, with teachers and community educators creating temporary learning spaces in Renk County.<\/p>\n

A UNICEF report published September 29 highlighted the work of two educators helping children affected by displacement from Sudan’s conflict.<\/p>\n

The program operates in communities where many children have arrived after fleeing violence in neighboring Sudan.<\/p>\n

At Chummedi South Primary School, teachers are working with limited classroom space and resources while attempting to maintain regular learning.<\/p>\n

UNICEF said head teacher Umkaltom Abaker Osman, herself a returnee from Sudan, leads a team of eight teachers.<\/p>\n

She has received training in child-centered education as well as mental-health and psychosocial support.<\/p>\n

The school provides children with a routine and a safe environment following experiences of displacement.<\/p>\n

UNICEF said its Education in Emergencies program in Renk County is providing learning opportunities for almost 5,000 children.<\/p>\n

The program includes approximately 2,360 girls across eight formal and non-formal education centres.<\/p>\n

A total of 89 teachers are involved in supporting the program, UNICEF said.<\/p>\n

Another educator highlighted by UNICEF, Sadam Adam Abaker, is a refugee from Sudan who works as a bilingual volunteer teacher.<\/p>\n

He has helped establish safe learning spaces and has encouraged other volunteers to participate in teacher training.<\/p>\n

The school also operates help desks where children can confidentially report safety concerns or emotional distress.<\/p>\n

Teachers can then identify children who may require additional child-protection services.<\/p>\n

UNICEF said schools in Renk County continue to face shortages of safe classrooms, learning materials and reliable teacher support.<\/p>\n

The agency is calling for longer-term humanitarian funding and greater attention to the wellbeing of educators working in crisis-affected communities.<\/p>\n

UNICEF said education, child protection and psychosocial support remain essential for children affected by conflict and displacement.<\/p>\n
