HONG KONG, CHINA (HRNW)<\/strong> \u2014 M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res (MSF) is highlighting its experience providing cancer care to women in humanitarian and resource-limited settings, arguing that diagnosis, treatment and palliative care can be delivered even in difficult environments.<\/p>\n

MSF presented its experience at the World Cancer Congress in Hong Kong in September 2026.<\/p>\n

The organization said it is sharing lessons from cancer programs in Mali and Malawi, where medical teams have worked to improve access to screening, diagnosis and treatment.<\/p>\n

MSF said around 80 percent of deaths from breast and cervical cancer worldwide occur in low- and middle-income countries.<\/p>\n

The organization reported that more than 2,300 women received medical care for breast or cervical cancer through an MSF-supported program in Bamako, Mali, between 2021 and 2025.<\/p>\n

A retrospective study of patients treated through an MSF and Malian Ministry of Health program found that the proportion of cervical cancer patients diagnosed at an early stage increased between 2019 and 2022.<\/p>\n

MSF said the program nevertheless faced major challenges, including limited access to radiotherapy and difficulties caused by insecurity and barriers to healthcare.<\/p>\n

In Malawi, MSF’s program in Blantyre provides access to cancer treatment and palliative care, including chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy.<\/p>\n

The program also supports cervical cancer prevention, including HPV vaccination and screening for precancerous lesions.<\/p>\n

MSF reported that cervical cancer screening coverage in Blantyre district increased from about 40 percent in 2019 to close to 60 percent in 2025.<\/p>\n

The organization also participates in research examining lower-cost approaches to screening and treating precancerous cervical lesions.<\/p>\n

MSF said high medicine prices, shortages, limited specialist staff and weaknesses in supply systems continue to restrict access to cancer treatment in many low-resource settings.<\/p>\n

The organization is calling for greater investment in cancer services and improved availability of affordable diagnostics and treatments.<\/p>\n

MSF said humanitarian healthcare systems need to address non-communicable diseases alongside emergency medical needs.<\/p>\n

Its participation at the World Cancer Congress is part of the organization’s broader advocacy for more equitable access to cancer prevention and treatment.<\/p>\n
