Mexico City (HRNW)-\u00a0Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has responded to US President Donald Trump\u2019s criticism of Mexico over drug trafficking, emphasizing that the issue involves responsibilities on both sides of the US-Mexico border.<\/p>\n
Trump said in his address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly that Mexico must take stronger action against drug cartels and described the country as a center of cartel activity.<\/p>\n
Responding at a press briefing in Mexico City, Sheinbaum said Mexico could also point to the high level of illegal drug consumption in the United States and the flow of firearms from the US into Mexico. She added that she would not frame the issue in those terms because cooperation between the two governments is continuing.<\/p>\n
Sheinbaum has repeatedly argued that combating cross-border organized crime requires shared responsibility, including action against drug consumption and criminal distribution networks in the United States, as well as efforts to prevent firearms from entering Mexico illegally.<\/p>\n
Mexican government data presented by Sheinbaum\u2019s administration says that a large proportion of firearms seized in Mexico originate in the United States. The government has also reported seizures of drugs, firearms, and the dismantling of clandestine drug-production facilities as part of its national security strategy.<\/p>\n
The exchange comes amid continued security cooperation and disagreements between Washington and Mexico City over the fight against drug cartels, including questions about responsibility for drug demand, weapons trafficking, money laundering, and cartel operations.<\/p>\n
The two governments continue to engage on security matters while also negotiating broader bilateral issues, including trade and economic relations.<\/p>\n
