DAKAR, SENEGAL (HRNW)<\/strong> \u2014 M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res (MSF) has provided emergency medical and humanitarian assistance to more than 1,000 migrants who survived attempted boat crossings toward the Canary Islands, highlighting the continuing dangers faced by people seeking safety through the Atlantic migration route.<\/p>\n

MSF said on September 7 that 1,046 people<\/strong> disembarked in vulnerable conditions during the final week of August at Nouadhibou in Mauritania and Rosso and Dakar in Senegal. They had been aboard seven boats that departed from The Gambia and became stranded at sea.<\/p>\n

The survivors included 134 women, including one pregnant woman, and 88 minors<\/strong> requiring protection. MSF teams provided emergency medical care, water, food, blankets, dignity kits and mental-health support, while severe cases were referred for specialized treatment.<\/p>\n

Medical teams reported treating people suffering from extreme dehydration, unconsciousness, fractures, exhaustion and skin, gastric and respiratory infections after spending prolonged periods at sea.<\/p>\n

MSF said many survivors described violence in their countries of origin and along the migration route. The organization is calling on West African and European governments to establish safer and legal pathways for people seeking protection.<\/p>\n

The latest intervention adds to growing concerns about the humanitarian consequences of dangerous migration routes, where people continue to risk their lives because they lack safer alternatives.<\/p>\n

MSF said migration responses should prioritize human life, dignity and timely access to humanitarian assistance.<\/p>\n
