Geneva, Switzerland (HRNW):<\/strong> International and local human-rights organizations are preparing for the 63rd regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council<\/strong>, which is scheduled to begin in Geneva on 7 September 2026<\/strong> and continue through October. NGOs are preparing submissions, advocacy campaigns and side events on issues ranging from civic space and environmental rights to accountability and protection of human-rights defenders.<\/p>\n

The International Service for Human Rights has identified the upcoming session as an important opportunity for civil society to raise concerns about human-rights situations around the world and engage with governments, UN experts and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n

The Human Rights Council provides NGOs with consultative status an opportunity to participate in its work, including through written submissions and other forms of engagement. The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has published procedures for NGO participation during HRC63.<\/p>\n

Environmental organizations are also preparing to highlight the relationship between climate change, pollution, hazardous substances, water and human rights<\/strong>. The Geneva Environment Network has identified several environmental-rights issues that will receive attention during the September session.<\/p>\n

Civil-society participation is particularly important because NGOs can provide first-hand information about human-rights conditions, document abuses, represent affected communities and propose policy recommendations.<\/p>\n

The upcoming Council session comes amid growing international concern over shrinking civic space in several countries. Human Rights Watch, for example, has recently reported concerns over repression of independent civil society in Tunisia<\/strong>, including prosecutions, arrests, financial investigations and threats against organizations.<\/p>\n

For human-rights organizations, HRC63 therefore represents an important international platform for bringing national-level concerns to global attention.<\/p>\n

The September session is expected to generate significant discussion among governments, UN experts, NGOs and human-rights defenders over accountability, civic freedoms, environmental justice and protection of vulnerable communities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
