Washington (HRNW)-\u00a0US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has warned that Iran cannot be allowed to use the Strait of Hormuz as a means of pressuring the global economy and international trade, while Washington seeks to maintain financial pressure on Tehran.<\/p>\n
According to the US Treasury Department, Bessent discussed economic pressure on Iran and the situation in the Strait of Hormuz during a telephone conversation with Bahraini Finance Minister Sheikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa.<\/p>\n
Bessent stressed the importance of maintaining pressure on Iran\u2019s remaining financial sources and economic channels, while warning that individuals and entities providing financial support or assistance to the Iranian government could face accountability from Washington.<\/p>\n
The two officials also agreed to strengthen cooperation between the United States, Bahrain and other GCC countries against illicit financial activities and to enhance regional economic security.<\/p>\n
The Strait of Hormuz remains a crucial global energy route through which significant volumes of oil and gas from the Persian Gulf reach international markets. Any disruption to shipping could therefore affect global energy prices, trade and supply chains.<\/p>\n
The latest discussions indicate that Washington is seeking to strengthen financial and economic measures against Iran in coordination with Gulf countries, amid continuing tensions between the United States and Tehran over the strategic waterway.<\/p>\n
