Sometimes, the death of a person is not merely a death. It becomes a question that stands before the state, the police, the investigative system and the conscience of society. The case of Mir Raza Ali appears to be one such question.<\/p>\n
Mir Raza Ali was only 25. An IBA graduate and founder of \u201cWafflix,\u201d he was a young man building his future and pursuing his dreams. On the night of July 28, he disappeared from his home in Karachi\u2019s PECHS area. The following day, his body was recovered from Gulistan-e-Johar.<\/p>\n
For any family, losing a son under such circumstances is unimaginable. But the pain becomes even more unbearable when, instead of simply seeking answers about their loved one\u2019s death, the family has to fight to establish that he was murdered rather than that he took his own life.<\/p>\n
Initially, the incident was reportedly given the impression of a suicide. From the very beginning, however, the family rejected that version and insisted that Mir Raza Ali had been murdered. A second post-mortem later revealed signs of physical violence, while traces of acid were also reported. Following these developments, murder provisions were added to the case.<\/p>\n
This raises a basic question: if the family had been insisting from the outset that this was a murder, why did it take so long for that possibility to be seriously pursued? And if subsequent investigations revealed evidence of violence, how did such a significant discrepancy emerge during the initial investigation?<\/p>\n
Then came another troubling development: the investigation teams reportedly changed more than five times.<\/p>\n
One, two, three\u2014but more than five changes.<\/p>\n
With every change, another question emerged: what exactly is happening in this case that has resulted in the investigation repeatedly being transferred from one team to another?<\/p>\n
The contradictions between the post-mortem reports have only deepened the family\u2019s concerns. For a grieving family, what could be more painful than trying to understand how their loved one died while facing conflicting reports and unanswered questions at every stage?<\/p>\n
Now, the Sindh government has established a judicial commission to investigate the matter. According to the government, the objective is to ensure a transparent and impartial investigation. The commission will be headed by Sindh High Court Justice Umar Sial and is expected to submit its report within 30 days.<\/p>\n
On the face of it, such a step should provide reassurance to a bereaved family. Yet Mir Raza Ali\u2019s family has rejected the decision.<\/p>\n
The family says it was not taken into confidence before the commission was established and that it was not even informed about the commission\u2019s Terms of Reference. The family had already written to the Sindh Chief Minister, requesting the formation of a Joint Investigation Team, or JIT.<\/p>\n
And this is where the real issue goes beyond the question of whether there should be a judicial commission or a JIT.<\/p>\n
The real issue is trust<\/strong>.<\/p>\n If the government believes that a judicial commission is the best way forward, why was the family not taken into confidence? If transparency was the objective, why was there no consultation regarding the commission\u2019s mandate? And if the family already had reservations about the investigation, can a commission formed without addressing those concerns truly restore their confidence?<\/p>\n Justice is not merely the final decision of a court.<\/p>\n Justice is also the process through which a victim\u2019s family is made to believe that the state stands with them.<\/p>\n When a mother, father, brother or sister demands justice for a murdered loved one, they are not simply asking for legal proceedings. They are asking for the assurance that the state understands their pain and is determined to uncover the truth.<\/p>\n For Mir Raza Ali\u2019s family, perhaps the biggest question is not whether there will be a commission or a JIT.<\/p>\n Their real question is: What happened to their son?<\/strong><\/p>\n How did he leave his home?<\/p>\n How did he reach Gulistan-e-Johar?<\/p>\n How did signs of violence appear on his body?<\/p>\n How did traces of acid emerge?<\/p>\n Why was his death initially portrayed as suicide?<\/p>\n Why were there contradictions between the post-mortem reports?<\/p>\n And ultimately, who is responsible for what happened to him?<\/p>\n These answers are not important only to Mir Raza Ali\u2019s family. They matter to a society where a young life can be lost, while the search for justice continues for months or even years.<\/p>\n We often say that the law is equal for everyone. But the real test of equality before the law comes when the accused is not necessarily powerful, when the victim is no longer alive to tell his own story, and when the family is left to become the only voice speaking on his behalf.<\/p>\n Mir Raza Ali can no longer speak for himself.<\/p>\n Now, the evidence must speak.<\/p>\n The forensic evidence must speak. The post-mortem reports must speak. The investigation must speak. And above all, an impartial and credible process must speak loudly enough that no one is left with legitimate grounds to question its integrity.<\/p>\n That is why the disagreement between the Sindh government and the victim\u2019s family is not a minor procedural dispute. It is a test of how the state responds when the trust of a grieving family is at stake.<\/p>\n The family has now approached the Sindh High Court and filed a petition against the judicial commission. The court has issued notices to the parties and sought responses by August 31.<\/p>\n On August 31, the court will not merely hear another case.<\/p>\n It will also hear the echo of a family\u2019s question:<\/p>\n Who will give us justice?<\/strong><\/p>\n Perhaps the answer should not simply be that it will be a commission or a JIT.<\/p>\n The real answer should be that whichever institution conducts the investigation must do so with such transparency, impartiality and credibility that Mir Raza Ali\u2019s family can finally believe that the state has not forgotten their son.<\/strong><\/p>\n Because delayed justice is painful.<\/p>\n But the loss of faith in the process of justice is even more dangerous.<\/p>\n Mir Raza Ali cannot be brought back. No commission, no JIT and no court verdict can return a son to his family.<\/p>\n But a transparent investigation, an impartial finding and lawful punishment for those responsible could at least give the family the assurance that their son\u2019s death was not forgotten and that his life mattered.<\/p>\n This is not merely a case for Mir Raza Ali\u2019s family.<\/p>\n It is a test of our justice system.<\/strong><\/p>\n And the question remains:<\/p>\n When will the truth behind Mir Raza Ali\u2019s death finally emerge\u2014and where, exactly, did justice get lost?<\/strong><\/p>\n
